Joshuas Rock N.Y.
4 August 1900.
My dear Dr. Abernethy:
Mr. Watson got your letter and
wrote immediately to me to go with Allegra to
Broadway which would be the best answer
to your inquiries. He thought Broadway to be
about forty miles beyond Whitehall. On looking
it up on the best maps we have I see that it is 150 miles from here
or more. Perhaps I could get there if I knew the
way, but my railroad maps do not know it and
my other maps are old and leave it in
the middle of Vermont. I should go if I knew
how to get there and that you cared to see me,
or I should send Mrs. Watson. But Watson
did not leave any directives for telegraphing and
as he does not stay in his house Mrs. Watson cannot
reach him before Monday when he will write to
you. I am five miles from Caldwell and cannot
get a paper or any other information. If you could
send me directives I might go to
Broadway. Or would not you like a little visit at
my house. Allegra is in the next cottage and I
could meet you or have you met at Caldwell and
brought over. Allegra is mature in her ways and
would please you I think. There are two or three
children in the settlement who have been coached
by her in preceeding summers and who liked it very
much.
I send two photographs which may give
you some idea of her looks. One is scratched
but it is the only one I have.
Very truly
Edwd. Eggleston
